Leftfield
Leftfield offer a more considered approach than the wham-bam sonic and
visual deluge of the reigning dance kings, The Chemical Brothers. Instead of the
Brothers dizzying array of psychedelic slides, Leftfield opt for a backdrop
which resembles the interior of the Tardis. Instead of an orgasmic build-up
throughout the set, they duck and dive, following full-on tracks with come-down
interludes or boring bits, to use the vernacular.
Worse, their obligatory vocal guest is an irritating and largely superfluous
rapper of the "Glasgow, make some noise" school. Gladly, if it will
make you shut up, mate.
If Leftfield suffer a little in comparison with other dance acts at the top of
the league table, it is only a minor let-down for which they atone by saving the
best until last.
The primal beat of their Guinness advertisement soundtrack, Phat Planet, could
have throbbed harder and done without vocal embellishment from the over-zealous
MC, but in the last 12 months there has been no greater dance-floor epiphany.
