Alice Cooper

Sun 16 July 2000

As Bowie recently proved at Glastonbury there are few true rock stars in this world but tonight Glasgow were privileged to witness one of the greatest. Alice Cooper is not only a legend but a showman extraordinaire!  1900 fans consisting of  painted teens,  ageing Goths, 50-some rockers and curious bystanders  packed into the Barrowland Ballroom, the heaving venue transformed for the evening into a wonderful, sweating, shimmering and stomping "Theatre of Rock".

From the moment Alice entered the stage he was in command of his faithful. Beginning the set with a blistering version of the title track from his new CD "Brutal Planet", he stalked the stage menacingly, bullying his audience into  submission, with sheer charisma. Even though some of the material is overtly tongue in cheek and blatantly rock circus,  hidden among the glitter, glam and gore is a back catalogue of jewels including, Only Women Bleed, Schools Out, Elected, Poison,  Billion Dollar Babies, No More Mr Nice Guy, Feed My Frankenstein and a ripping cover of the Who's My Generation. Alice is not at his most chatty but still finds time to give a gothic address to the haggis and berate a bemused fan in the front row for wearing a Kiss T-shirt.

As you would expect Alice surrounds himself with talent and his band form a tight unit which could hold their own in the heaviest metal company.  The support band Lukan also deserve a mention for putting on a class warm up of American grunge metal and could be favoured comparably with the likes of Creed and A Perfect Circle.

Seeing an Alice Cooper concert is not just about rock cliché or nostalgia, it is a event and a stunning example of just how to be a rock star! Alice finishes the show waving a Scottish flag and sporting a "Brittany wants me T-Shirt". The man is a true professional and she could do worse than learn a few star lessons from this old hound from hell.
