Saturday
night, then.
Spray-on testosterone? Old-skool trainers with steel toecaps? Amphetamine
sulphate and anabolic steroid cocktails? Eyes on big screen, upside down eyes on
big screen? A floating cube? Lager, lager, lager and, indeed, shouting.
Welcome to the world of Dig your Own Hole. A hard, heavy, fierce, sledgehammer
of beats epitomised by The Chemical Brothers and in full effect at the Glasgow
Barrowlands.
Fabulous.
Outstanding.
Tres, tres bien.
Tom Rowlands and Ed Simmons, two of the most unlikely looking dance masters, mix
up the brew that has been termed TripHop, but is probably more accurately
described as Chemical Brothers - esque. With Tim Burgess, James Dean Bradfield
and St Etienne amongst the pop stars queuing up to work with them you just knew
this gig was going to be awesome.
Psychedelic grooves, funk samples, blocking beats, non-stop partying for two
hours and two DJs backing them at either side - that's five hours of block
rocking beats.
But enough of this rant - what about the gig?
Edge of the seat stuff - if you were still sitting down. Which is unlikely. For
Ed Simmons' and Tim Rowlands' formula is a complex one, a carefully measured
mish-mash of pulverising riffs, steely funk baselines, acid sirens and
psychedelic groove beats that miss out the jugular and head straight for the
heart. Block Rocking Beats kicks things off. The Private Psychedelic Reel is
there too, of sorts, as is Setting Sun and a few other faves from Exit Planet
Dust- all rehashed, revamped and delivered into a truly, unique chemical
experience.
If Oasis are the best thing to happen to rawk n' roll, then The Chemical
Brothers are flying the flag with viva Acid House scrawled upon it in large
letters.
